Legal Secretary

Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Amalgamated Transit Union has an immediate opening for a Legal Secretary , Grade 7 position. The ATU is the largest union representing transit employees in the United States and Canada. We are looking for a legal secretary to work alongside the department’s six attorneys and other staff in a fast-moving and collegial environment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Process correspondence for attorneys, including proofreading for content, style, grammar and spelling, revising documents, and putting letters and filings into final form.
• Organize and maintain databases and files.
• Assist in the management of the ATU’s program tracking and processing federal subsidies to transit systems involving a large docket of pending applications to ensure that the appropriate employee protective provisions are in place.
• Perform fact research involving transit systems and our affiliated local unions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Location:
The legal secretary will work out of the ATU’s headquarters office. Currently, the ATU’s headquarters is located at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. We anticipate moving to our newly purchased building at 21 Dupont Circle, Washington, DC by the end of 2027.

There is a two-day per week work-from-home option upon completion of a 90-day probationary period.

Compensation:
The starting hourly rate is $38.372. You will be compensated at the rate of one and one-half times your regular hourly rate of pay for hours worked over 7.5 hours per day or 37.5 hours per week, subject to deductions for taxes and other withholdings as required by law. After successfully completing a 90-day probationary period and after six (6) months of employment, you will be granted an increase.
